Each episode features all four athletes’ as they risk their health, relationships, finances, and beyond, in an attempt to realise their ambitions. Through exclusive access and pulse-pounding action sequences, Breakthrough is a never-before-seen look at what it takes to make it to the next level.

ATHLETE PROFILES

Natalie Decker

Natalie is beginning her first year in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, where she’ll be racing stock cars against some of the best drivers in the world. Blonde and bubbly, Natalie is a lightning rod for harassment and online trolls, who think women have no place on the racetrack.

Hollie Doyle

In her mid-20s, Hollie is already a horse racing star. She set a record for annual wins by a British female jockey in 2019 when she rode 119 winners. She followed it up with an astonishing 151 wins the next following season. This year, she’s looking to top herself yet again.

Emily Linscott

British driver Emily, 18, is leaving her family to travel to America to compete in Formula 4. With incredible on-track skill and a wealth of great people around her, Emily’s main hurdle for the season will be money. She’s already spent every penny her parents have and will need to start landing sponsors if she hopes to complete the season.

Leilani Caamal

Leilani has played football since Pop Warner. Talented and experienced, she’s just made her high school’s varsity team as a junior. Through the season she’ll navigate the politics of football and gender, all while trying to live as a normal teenager.

EPISODE GUIDE

Episode 1

Natalie and Emily prepare to race in new leagues, where they’ll be driving faster and against better opponents than ever before. Leilani makes Varsity but then hits a roadblock when she’s sidelined for the first time in her life, while Hollie Doyle’s season is in full swing and is chasing down last year’s record for most wins by a British female jockey.

Episode 2

After great finishes in their last races, both Emily and Hollie try to build on their momentum. Natalie prepares to race at Talladega Superspeedway, a racetrack with a reputation for lots of accidents and massive pileups. Leilani’s frustration builds as she continues to feel like just another benchwarmer.

Episode 3

The bullying Natalie faces online spills into the real world when a man from Nashville posing a true security risk threatens to show up to her next race. Hollie Doyle makes a small mistake on the track that has big consequences, her record-breaking streak may be in jeopardy. One of Leilani’s closest teammates is hospitalized after an on-field injury. Emily’s father pays her a surprise visit to the United States.

Episode 4

Tremendous financial pressure threatens to unseat Emily’s F4 season, she’s struggling to land sponsors and is close to running out of money. Natalie returns to Wisconsin to race in front of her family, including her father and grandfather, two former racers. Hollie’s weeklong ban means she has unexpected time off. She has to choose between planning for her wedding or training for the next race. Leilani prepares to play in her homecoming game, where she’s also been nominated for homecoming royalty.

Episode 5

Leilani confronts her coach about her lack of playtime, who offers a bargain if she’s willing to swallow her pride. After making an embarrassing mistake, Natalie must force herself to move forward from the incident. Emily’s F4 struggles continue as her dad returns home to the UK. After finishing her suspension, Hollie competes in one of the biggest horse races of the season, with Queen Elizabeth II in attendance.

Episode 6

Tired of struggling to get playtime on her high school football team, Leilani commits herself to the Women’s Football Alliance where her efforts are immediately rewarded. Natalie and Hollie both put up stunning season-ending performances, while the money issues Emily has faced all season finally come to a head.
